Well, it looks like Anonymous has pissed off the LGBT community leading to organized counter-protests (to be held at the Civic Center BART station this Monday, August 29th) by posting nude photos of a BART spokesman who happens to be gay. I don’t know what “gay-baiting” is, but to make this a gay issue kind of overlooks the underlying point. Nobody is saying these leaks were racist because the BART director is black. So why is it assumed to be bigotry, simply because he is gay? Can’t a nigga be gay up in the bay? The underlying issue being spun into a “gay rights” issue is that A HUMAN had his personal life exploited (allegedly) for an activism agenda.

Not that I have any sympathy for gangsters, whether they are crips or politicians, but the monitoring of twitter by police recently led to the arrest of 56 people in blue clothing for standing in a park being suspicious. Maybe they were plotting and scheming something heinous. Maybe gangsters just like to get together for a BBQ once in a while like the rest of us. I don’t know and nobody will ever know for certain. Is it better safe than sorry to have police monitoring social network activity to prevent potential flash mobs from gathering in the name of destruction?

I’m questioning whether organizing a group DDoS specifically for the purpose of protest should be treated as a crime. Does it merit the extreme penalties participants of DDoS activism are potentially subject to? Could such activism be organized in a more acceptable, democratic fashion? How would you feel about guidelines being established for DDoS demonstrations?

Amelia Andersdotter makes some valid points here. Please notice that she felt strongly enough about this to speak contrary to the position her party had previously announced. Personally, I think such an act is characteristic of a leader who will examine the credence of a given situation, rather than yield to doxa. Living in a time when we hardly expect a politician to be anything more than a pandering sophist, I feel that such a refreshing act deserves a bit of praise. So, great job, Miss Andersdotter! I hope you hold onto this quality and it serves your peers well.
That said, I’ve personally gone back and forth about how I feel about DDoS. It is important to note that this is being used as a means for young people to have their voice heard in a political climate which otherwise ignores or labels them as “politically insensitive.” While they have now demonstrated that this is not true, I really can’t find justification for making a criminal of a 16 year old net activist.
