Mic Doesn’t work with Skype on your Ubuntu linux machine? It took me a while to find this solution and it seems to be a common problem. So, hoping it is also a common solution, I will now share it with you few, poor bastards who are reading this asking “how the hell do I get my mic to work?”
Edit: This fix still applies in Ubuntu 11.10.
Specify the module you are using in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.
For my Inspiron 1501, I appended this module to the end of the alsa-base.config file:
options snd-hda-intel model=dell-m26
Those steps definitely needed to be taken, but in order to get the mic capture to work on my Dell Inspiron 1501 with the STAC92XX module, there was one more setting to be adjusted to solve this issue.
Make sure the capture switch value is set to true.
Run alsamixer in terminal, press F5 to show all, select the capture volume bar and press spacebar to active/unmute it.
Skype should now accept your microphone input. You may need to go into Skype options and turn of the automatic volume adjustment thing.
